ISSUE NO.1 JANUARY 2003

1. TRUST ACCOUNT REPORTS

Some members have not sent in their Auditors and Trustees Reports pursuant to Section 12 (1) of the Trust Accounts Act,

Trustees who have not submitted their Reports are urgently advised to make necessary arrangements to comply with the above.

Please note that failure to comply will result in non-issuance of your Practising Certificate for 2003.

 

  1. APPLICATION FORM FOR MEMBERSHIP & PRACTISING CERTIFICATE – 2003

Application Form for Membership & Practising Certificate 2003 have already been mailed out to all Members.

You are therefore kindly advised to pay your fees by the 31st March 2003.

Please note that Members who do not pay their fees by the due date, will not have their names listed in a classified advertisement that will be published in the Fiji Times in the first week of April. This advertisement will advise the general public of the names of those practitioners who have been issued with a Practising Certificate for 2003.

 

3. CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION

A Continuing Legal Education Programme will be held on 7 February 2003 in Lautoka at the Waterfront Hotel from 6.00pm-7.30pm. The topic is "Review of Recent Decisions of Court of Appeal". Members who do not have the required 10 CLE hours and wish to attend the seminar should send in a payment of $10.00 (Cheque Only) to Mrs. Usha Kumar at Young & Associates or Tel: 6660044.

Members who are not sure of their CLE Hours for Year 2002 can contact Mehzabeen at the Secretariat on Tel: 3315690.

A Continuing Legal Education Programme for Year 2003 is also attached for members information.

Please note:

All members are required to pay a fee of $10.00 Per Session for attending any CLE Seminar in 2003.

    5. PRACTICE MANAGEMENT COURSE

    Members are reminded that the previously postponed Practice Management Course will now be held on Saturday, 8 February 2003 at the FNPF Conference Room, FNPF Building, Plaza One, Level 2, Ellery Street, Suva, commencing at 8.00am.

    6. FIJI LAW REPORTS

    Applications are invited from members who are interested in assisting Hon. Madam Justice Nazhat Shameem in the law reporting of cases in Fiji. Responsibilities will include; attending meetings with Justice Shameem as the Law Society’s representative; identify judgments to be reported; prepare headnotes for the law reports based on the following categories:

      1. Cases in alphabetical order;
      2. Statutes;
      3. Topics.

    Please send in your quotations as soon as possible to the Secretariat. Interested Members should also be a Computer (IT) literate and expected to sit on Committee Meetings.

    7. AWARD OF IBA PRACTICE DIPLOMA SCHOLARSHIP

    Congratulations!

    Scholarship for the International Bar Association / College of Law of England and Wales – Practice Diploma Scholarship Programme has been awarded to Mr. Sakimi Samuels of Westpac Banking Corporation and to Ms. Roonesh Shoma Singh Devan of Patel Sharma & Associates.

    8. DETAILS OF CONFERENCES – LOCAL & INTERNATIONAL.

      1. Fiji Collective Copyright Management Workshop
      2. This Workshop will be held in Fiji on 18 and 19 February 2003.

        This Workshop is sponsored by the International Federation of Reprographic Rights Organisations (IFRRO), and is to be conducted by Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) of Australia, Copyright Licensing Limited (New Zealand), and hosted by the University of the South Pacific.

      3. Fiji Law Society Conference 2003
      4. A 3 day Conference is being planned from 18-20 July 2003.

      5. IPBA Conference
      6. The Inter-Pacific Bar Association Conference and Annual Meeting will be held in New Delhi from 16-19 February 2003.

      9. The University of Auckland – Faculty of Law Conference
      10. (i) Taking Torrens into the 21st Century

        This Conference will be held from 20 – 21 March 2003 at the University of Auckland.

        This Conference will address the continuing development of the Torrens system of land registration in New Zealand, Australia and comparable jurisdictions.

      13. IBA World Women Lawyers Conference

    This will be held from 30 June – 1 July 2003, London, United Kingdom.

    This Conference has been designed to ensure that it is attractive and meaningful as possible to lawyers from all works of legal life and for lawyers throughout the world. The content has a balance between learning how women lawyers are contributing in various different ways to public interest work and how they can widen their role in this area.
